Individual Therapy Specialties

Neurodivergent Adults, ADHD & Autism

You may have spent years masking, feeling misunderstood, or wondering why everyday life takes so much effort. Whether you have a diagnosis or are exploring ADHD, autism, AuDHD, or twice-exceptionality (2e), individual therapy can help you understand your brain, identity, strengths, and support needs. We can explore sensory overload, emotional intensity, everyday demands, unmasking, and neurodivergent burnout, including the effects of chronic criticism, rejection, misunderstanding, and having your needs dismissed. For highly sensitive people and empaths, this can also mean making sense of feeling deeply, absorbing other people’s emotions, and becoming overstimulated, while understanding your limits and making room for yourself. You do not need to be a parent to work with me.

Perinatal Mental Health

The process of becoming a new parent is filled with paradoxical sensations. You've never felt so much overwhelming excitement and fear at the same time. You're constantly feeling two contrasting emotions at once. You are filled with overwhelming joy and back pain. Your dreams are finally coming true and you're vomiting every time you eat. Maybe it's the hormones, maybe it's the lack of sleep. It's impossible to ever truly know. The process of becoming a biological parent takes a toll on both the mind and body. Postpartum depression and anxiety disorders can affect birthing and non-birthing parents. Support can begin while trying to conceive or navigating infertility, continue through pregnancy and postpartum, and include processing difficult or traumatic birth experiences. There is room for identity changes, relationship shifts, and the experiences of both birthing and non-birthing parents, including dads.

Neurodivergent Children

Neurodivergent children have brain differences that can be seen both as strengths and challenges. They process and interact with the world differently. Your child might be a sensory seeker who drains your energy fast, or your child may be a sensory avoider who hides during your efforts to show them fun. Your child might be autistic or have ADHD, or perhaps you refer to them as your "wild child." No matter what the case, you know you need to do something different for your quirky child. I can help you learn how to parent using neurodiversity affirming strategies. This includes parenting gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) children, understanding their strengths alongside their support needs, and navigating the experience of being a neurodivergent parent yourself.

Parental Burnout

Have you ever yelled at your kids and felt regret about it afterwards? Welcome to the club. Nothing will test your patience more than the beautiful little space invaders you've committed your life to raising. Let's figure out how to help you feel slightly less reactive, frazzled, and defeated on your journey through parenthood. Mindful parenting, self care, and practicing patience can help immensely. Self care is tricky to fit in as a parent, and I can help you troubleshoot how to care for yourself while caring for everyone else. We can work through sensory overload, emotional exhaustion, working-parent stress, and the mental load, including the challenges involved dads face. There is space to explore gentle parenting while reparenting yourself and to find ways of meeting your own needs alongside your children’s.

Becoming a New Stepparent, Blended Families, & Coparenting

Starting your family from the ashes of someone else's divorce can be a jarring reality for a kindhearted individual who thinks to themselves, "I can date someone with kids, I love kids!" One day you're falling in love, the next day you're knee deep in court orders, custody schedules, parental alienation, child support, co-parenting. Adding your own kids into the mix makes it even more fun! We can explore finding your role as a stepparent, feeling like an outsider in your own family, differing parenting expectations, and coparenting conflict and boundaries. Therapy offers room to balance your needs with those of children, partners, and other households.

parents of toddlers and young children

Being a parent is especially stressful when your child's prefrontal cortex isn't fully developed yet. Toddlers can seamlessly transition from feeling exuberant elation and harrowing sorrow. Brain growth is exponential in the first few years of life, which is why your toddler's emotions are constantly going haywire. What does this mean for your relationship with them? They need you to help manage their big feelings. You are their emotional control center. Parents help toddlers do this through a process called co-regulation. We can explore your own triggers and sensory limits, help you understand your child’s emotional needs, and find ways to respond to big feelings with less reactivity while making room for your own.

Relationship Support

Did you know about 60% of couples report a drop in relationship satisfaction after having a baby? It can be easy to lose sight of one another when there are tiny humans interrupting you every time you try to have an intimate moment. Parenting differences and the increased responsibility can bring up a lot of new challenges in what was otherwise a very happy relationship before adding kids.

Anxiety, Perfectionism, Codependency & Boundaries

Individual therapy can help with anxiety, perfectionism, people pleasing, self-doubt, and harsh self-criticism that leave you second-guessing yourself or afraid to disappoint others. We can explore codependency, overfunctioning, guilt, difficulty saying no, family conflict, and feeling responsible for everyone else’s well-being, including supporting a loved one with severe mental illness. Together we can work on boundaries, self-trust, identifying your needs, reparenting yourself, and changing longstanding family patterns.

Life Transitions & Identity Changes

Changes in work, relationships, family roles, or where you live can unsettle your routines, expectations, and sense of identity. Leaving a familiar role may mean figuring out who you are now, even when the change was something you wanted or chose. Individual therapy can help you make room for mixed feelings, understand what you need, and find your footing, including when change feels especially demanding as a neurodivergent or highly sensitive person.

Caregiver Burnout, Grief & Pet Loss

Caring for a loved one with significant or ongoing needs can bring exhaustion, guilt, resentment, and competing responsibilities. Individual therapy offers space for the complicated feelings that can exist alongside love, including anticipatory grief and the strain of caring for an aging or ill pet. I also support people facing euthanasia decisions and grieving pet loss, including the changes in routines, identity, and daily life that can follow a loss.
